Our objective was to assess the severity, incidence, type and location of injuries sustained during the top-tier of the Portuguese rugby union senior male fifteens championship.

Injury rate in elite principal team sports after COVID-19 Lockdown: A literature review

Background: In 2020 many people, including professional sportsmen, were in quarantine for many months around the world. Professional sport team players change the modality of training. So, it is indispensable to understand the performance modifications after lockdown. Methods: A search was conducted on the main international databases considering the studies conducted in team sports. Results: The studies show a higher injuries incidence in basketball, in futsal and in American football after lockdown. However, there are conflicting data about soccer, in which only incidence about muscular injuries is generally higher. Conclusions: Lockdown generally increases injuries, above all at the resumption of competitions. It is important give players a sufficient time to recover the athletic condition.

Schulterschmerzen beim Sportler

Athletes have a relevant risk of shoulder problems that do not only affect the typical overhead sports. In most cases, these are overuse problems that can be treated with consistent therapy, training optimisation and temporary abstinence from sports if they are recognised promptly. In parallel, depending on the type of sport, traumatic shoulder injuries can be found, which are usually easier to recognise in diagnostics and sometimes also require surgical therapy. In this paper, we give an overview of the various diagnoses and the main features of treatment.

The following paper is intended to provide an overview of the various causes of foot pain. Depending on the localization, the differential diagnoses can be further narrowed down and confirmed with additional examinations and imaging. Depending on the type of sport, the risk of certain injuries or degenerative changes is increased.

Pain and discomfort in the knee joint are common reasons for consultations in daily routine. The reasons are diverse and can be of traumatic or chronic origin. Identifying the reason for knee pain may be challenging. Using a “knee-map” may help to diagnose possible pathologies. Consequently, treatment depends on the final diagnosis. When a traumatic effusion is present, a relevant intra-articular damage should be considered.

No Pain – No Gain(?)

In almost any gym in the world you will be confronted with T-shirts brandishing slogans like “No Pain – No Gain” or “Pain is weakness leaving the body”. Everybody knows that you have to push through the pain, and most people still assume that muscle soreness is a hallmark of a worthwhile work-out. The older one among us will remember Arnold’s adages about screaming while working out, the younger ones follow people doing exactly that on Instagram and TikTok. So – is experiencing and ignoring pain a criterion for quality in sports?
