Sport medicine is not offered as a separate specialist medical training in the German-speaking countries, and for this reason Danube University Krems has aimed to establish an innovative, interdisciplinary master’s program. The goal is to offer physicians a practice-oriented continuing education that covers a broad spectrum.
Covering all female sports teams poses particular challenges. From a legal point of view, sports medical team care is characterized by various areas of tension. In particular, sports physicians have to balance health protection with patient autonomy, professional secrecy with the protective rights of third parties, and enhancing physical performance with fair competition. These dilemmas occur in extremely compressed form in the case of head injuries during competition.
This article describes the core competencies of sportsphysiotherapy, illustrates these with clinical examples and shows how these competencies are instructed in the master of science program in sportsphysiotherapy at the swiss univesity of applied science in (ZHAW) in Winterthur switzerland.
